Cone valves, explained

A cone-valve upgrade for the fork you already have.

A cone valve swaps the compression shims in a fork's mid-valve for a machined cone and spring. WP builds the idea into its Pro Components forks and cartridge kits. The Tintic Reds CV brings it to the mid-valve of your stock fork, for KYB SSS, WP Xplor, WP Xact and Showa.

What a cone valve does

A stock mid-valve carries two sets of thin, flat shims: the compression shims stacked on the underside of the valve, and the rebound shims on top. On compression, oil pushes past the compression stack. A cone valve replaces that compression stack with a machined cone held by a spring. The rebound shims stay where they are.

The result is compression damping that stays firm and controlled through the normal stroke but opens wide on sharp impacts: holdup where you want it, and less of the spike that deflects the front end on square-edged rocks, roots and braking chop.

Three ways to get cone-valve damping

They differ mostly in how much of the fork they replace, and so in price.

Cone valve or revalve?

A revalve rearranges the stock compression and rebound shims. A cone valve replaces the mid-valve's compression shims with a cone and spring and keeps the rebound shims, and your tuner sets it up for your weight and riding when it goes in. They aren't either-or: many riders have both done at once, since the fork is already open.

How it goes in

A qualified suspension tuner installs it in about 90 minutes, normally during a standard fork service. Find one on our dealers page, or send your tuner the install guide. Every part we machine has a lifetime warranty, and unused kits can be returned or exchanged for a different fitment within 30 days.

Questions

What is a cone valve in a dirt bike fork?

A cone valve replaces the compression shims in a fork's mid-valve, the stack on the underside of the valve, with a machined cone and spring. Compression damping stays firm and controlled in the normal stroke but opens wide on sharp impacts, so you get holdup where you want it and less deflection on square-edged hits.

Is a Tintic cone valve the same thing as a WP cone-valve fork?

No. Both use a cone-valve design, but WP builds theirs into complete Pro Components forks and replacement cartridge kits. The Tintic Reds CV is a drop-in replacement mid-valve for the stock fork you already have, keeping its rebound shims, made in Pleasant Grove, Utah, and it fits KYB SSS, WP Xplor, WP Xact and Showa forks as well as WP's.

Is a cone valve better than a shim-stack revalve?

It's a different kind of change. A revalve rearranges the stock compression and rebound shims. A cone valve replaces the mid-valve's compression shims with a cone and spring, keeps the rebound shims, and your tuner sets it up for your weight and riding during the install. Many riders do both at once since the fork is already open.

Where will I feel a cone valve most?

On sharp, square-edged hits and braking chop. That's where a compression shim stack tends to spike and deflect the front end, and where the cone opens up.

Who installs a Tintic cone valve?

A qualified suspension tuner, in about 90 minutes, normally during a standard fork service. Find one on our dealers page, or send your tuner the install guide.

Do I need a cone valve in both fork legs?

For most forks, yes: those kits ship as a pair, one valve per leg. The WP Xact air fork carries its damping in one leg, so one valve does the bike. On the open-cartridge WP Xplor, one valve in one leg is the setup we support.
